I'M ON A LOW INCOME/AM A STUDENT; DO I QUALIFY FOR HELP WITH MY GLASSES?
We can provide a HC1 form for you to fill in and send off to the NHS in a prepaid envelope, they will calculate how much help you are entitled to.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE A SIGHT TEST?
On average about every two years to the age of 70, then yearly. Certain people may require more frequent examinations. For example diabetics or people who have a family history of glaucoma. Children should also be seen at least every year and in many cases every six months. We will advise you when we would recommend your next appointment, and our computerised recall system will automatically send you a reminder when you are due.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPENING TIMES?
We are open:

  • Monday-Friday 9am-5.30pm
  • Saturday 9am-1pm
  • Sunday closed

WHEN SHOULD CHILDREN FIRST HAVE THEIR EYES TESTED?
We recommend that children have an annual sight test from the age of 3 1/2 to 4 years old. However should you have any concerns, we are more than happy to examine children younger than this. Please call us should you have any queries.

I CAN SEE FINE, DO I ACTUALLY NEED TO HAVE A SIGHT TEST?
Yes, having your eyes examined is not just assessing how well you can see. The examination involves checking the general health of your eyes, your peripheral vision, your eye pressures and is a chance for you to discuss any concerns or questions you may have with your Optometrist.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE MY GLASSES?
It does depend on what sort of lenses you are having, but as a guide:

  • Standard single vision glasses we can make while you wait
  • Bifocals & Varifocals (including hi-index), approximately a week to 10 days
  • Hi-index single vision, approximately 5 days

WHY DO I NEED A DIFFERENT EYE TEST FOR CONTACT LENSES THAN MY NORMAL SIGHT TEST?
The standard eye test is primarily geared to determine the strength of lens you need. A prescription for contacts needs a good deal more information, including the dimensions of the eye and eyelids. Because the lenses are in direct contact with your eye, everything needs to be checked even more carefully.

I'M DIABETIC. DOES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Yes. Diabetes can cause severe problems with your sight. It is very important that your eyes are checked every year, preferably with drops to dilate the pupil, so that the retina (back of the eye) can be examined thoroughly.

IF THERE IS A HISTORY OF GLAUCOMA IN MY FAMILY, AM I LIKELY TO INHERIT IT?
If there is glaucoma in the family, you may be more at risk of developing it. Glaucoma can be treated effectively if it is diagnosed in time, so be sure to have a regular eye examination.
