Eye Examinations

Regular eye examinations are important as they can identify early signs of eye conditions which may not cause symptoms in their early stages. When caught early, many eye conditions can be treated successfully. Our eye examinations take approximately 30 minutes and during this time the optometrist will assess the health of your eyes and determine whether your vision needs correcting with a prescription lens.

Other conditions which can be discovered during an eye examination are;

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • High Cholesterol
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Cancer
  • Tumours

Eye examinations are recommended at least every 2 years depending on your age and medical history, the optometrist will advise you of how often you should have an eye examination.

Diabetic Screenings

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes you will be required to have a yearly diabetic retinopathy screening. Diabetic retinopathy is damage caused to the retina, at the back of the eye, caused by high blood sugars and anyone with diabetes is at some risk of developing this. Drops will be inserted in to your eyes to enlarge your pupils; these drops take approximately 20-30 minutes to work. Once the drops have worked you will have photographs taken of the back of your eyes to determine if there is any damage caused by high blood sugar. These photographs will be sent to the hospital for assessment.

Contact Lens Trials and Aftercares

If you wear contact lenses or are thinking about trying contact lenses we are able to assist you with your needs. Contact lenses can be worn full time or just for occasional uses such as an alternative to glasses for social occasions and sports. Our contact lens packages can be tailored to your requirements and we offer discount packages on new spectacles for regular contact lens buyers on a direct debit scheme.

Our most popular contact lens packages include daily wear lenses; 2-weekly wear lenses or monthly wear lenses at competitive prices. Other lens options are available; please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

Pre-Cataract Assessments

If you have been advised that you have a cataract, the only effective treatment is by removing it surgically. We can determine whether surgery would be an option for you during a pre-cataract assessment. A cataract is when the lens, the part of the eye that you use to focus, becomes clouded. This can be removed and an artificial lens inserted to improve your vision. Drops will be inserted to enlarge your pupils before the assessment so that the optometrist can get a good view of the cataract and ensure that there are no other eye conditions affecting you vision. If appropriate, you will then be referred to your chosen clinic for surgery.

Low Vision Assessments

The Wirral Low Vision scheme provides magnifying aids to anyone classed as having low vision. Our assessments take approximately 30 minutes and during this time you are able to discuss with the optometrist if you have any concerns or problems during your daily life caused by your low vision. We are then able to provide you with a magnifier and/or refer you to another professional such as the Low Vision Team who are able to provide you with more assistance to maintain your independence.

Minor Eye Conditions

If you are registered with a Wirral GP and are over the age of 16 we can provide a service for minor eye conditions such as a red eye, sticky eye and watery eye. You can often be seen without an appointment for this service but we will aim to see you within 24 hours if we cannot fit you in on the same day.
